General notes:
A much easier version of the back turning kick, the spinning hook kick
shouldn't be confused with the spinning crescent kick since this kick
is executed side on, instead of front on. Very good kick to use as part
of flowing combinations, this kick is very common in all forms of martial
arts that include kicks within their arsenal.

1) Stand in the ready stance. |
 |
2) Begin turning the head towards the rear (kicking) leg. The torso
should follow the head keeping the arms up but in, in order to make
sure that the body spins as fast as possible. |
 |
3) At this position, the head is now almost facing the opponent
and the back and supporting foot is also now almost facing away. This
torque like motion then sets up the resulting speed of rotation of
the hips which should in turn bring the leg round. However, it is
important that the torso does not begin to face the opponent until
the kick has been completed, and should begin to lean back to accommodate
the height of the kick. This stops the kick looking more like the
crescent kick. To get maximum power and speed from the kick, the chamber
position tends to be quite low to the floor rather than the higher
position that the side kick adopts. This gives maximum distance for
the foot to travel to its target area, (which is usually the head).

 |
4) This is the more complicated part of the kick, requiring the
attacker to use one set of muscles to bring the kick up to head height,
and then use another set to 'hook' the foot in to the side of the
opponents head. The leg should be brought up almost straight, towards
the side of the opponents' head. |
 |
5) This is the point of contact. The hamstrings and the movement
of the hips are then used in unison to bring the foot across the side
of the opponents' head using the heel to make impact. |
 |
6) Continue to bring the leg round the side of the body so that
the kicking leg is placed as the rear foot turning the torso towards
the opponent and back into its original position once the kick has
been completed. |
 |
7) Continue to bring the leg round the side of the body so that
the kicking leg is placed as the rear foot turning the torso towards
the opponent and back into its original position once the kick has
been completed. |
 |
8) The supporting foot has now become the leading foot once again. |
 |
9) Back in to the ready stance. |
